Carla Killough McClafferty

Carla Killough McClafferty writes nonfiction books on a wide variety of topics-all the way from George Washington to today’s concussion crisis in football.  While the subjects might be different, the one thing each of her books have in common is that they are each based on primary sources.   She loves to research real events and says she “writes nonfiction books with all the boring parts removed.”   Whether she writes about true stories of the past or the present, she weaves together related material in history, art, science, and technology to captivate her readers.  Because of this unique approach, Carla calls books she has written about specific people as “Biography Plus.”

Her literary nonfiction books fit the needs of classroom teachers as they incorporate more informational texts that align with the Common Core State Standards. Carla’s interactive presentation will pull back the curtain of creativity to reveal the writing process. Using specific examples, she will show how to use various primary source documents in ways that are both accurate and interesting.

She is a popular speaker at schools, teacher conferences, and professional development workshops and has presented programming at Mount Vernon, Colonial Williamsburg, the U.S. Holocaust Museum, the U.S. Consulate in Marseilles, France, and many more.
