Author Bio

Dorothy Hinshaw Patent

Dorothy Hinshaw Patent presents to schools and conferences around the country, bringing natural science alive to children, teachers and librarians alike. Dorothy’s more than 130 books cover topics such as evolution and adaptation, habitats and ecosystems, human and animal relationship, and western American history during the 19th and early 20th century. As a former tomboy who became a Ph.D. scientist, Dorothy understands the love many children have for nonfiction that reveals the secrets of nature. After her school visits, librariansand teachers report that her books fly off library shelves into the hands of children during subsequent weeks.

Her presentations to teachers give practical information on how to integrate compelling nonfiction books into the classroom curriculum. Her awards include the Washington Post / Children’s Book Guild Award for Nonfiction, the Golden Kite, and the Mountains and Plains Independent Booksellers Children’s Book Award, and the NCTE Orbis Pictus Honor Book Award.
